If you are an avid gardener or simply enjoy pottering in the garden, it is time to really start getting your hands dirty this month.
From planting summer bedding to lawncare, read on to find out more about attracting different species of birds and wildlife to your garden.
Here at Grosvenor, we really do have everything you could possibly need for a gorgeous garden this summer and this is the time to choose from our impressive range of bedding plants. Chosen from only the best British growers and sourced from as local to Grosvenor as possible, we ensure they arrive in the best possible condition. Choose from geraniums, fuschias and marguerites to name but a few for a bountiful display of colour in your flower beds for the next few months.
Begin to replace spring flowers from tubs and containers with summer plants now – but make sure the weather is not too cold. If it is, wait until later in the month. Don’t forget we could still suffer from late frosts, so don’t put away that protective fleece just yet!
Use supports for herbaceous plants or heavier flowering plants to take the strain away from the stems. This is best done this month before the plants grow too tall. Sweet peas will also need training via supports so that they are encouraged to climb for a better display.
Deadhead tulips and daffodils and separate daffodils and forget-me-nots now. Also allow the foliage to fade naturally without tying back. Spring flowering perennials should be cut back to encourage a new growth now and better growth for next year.
If you have spent the last couple of months growing from seed, these seedlings now need to become accustomed to the outdoors so leave them outside in a sheltered, warm position for short periods of time, thereby increasing the chances of the plants taking better once planted up in your borders. This will also apply to freshly taken cuttings but remember to avoid frosty conditions.
Your containers and hanging baskets should be fed every couple of weeks and always water well.
Winter bedding plants for next year can be sown and if you wish to grow your own spring bedding plants for next year too, you can begin to sow many biennials - look for pansies and wallflowers in particular.
Your lawn will need mowing weekly and also hoe out any weeds at the same time. Trim the edges to neaten the overall appearance and this will also prevent the lawn from spreading into the borders. Add grass clippings to your compost heap in moderation. Simply visit Grosvenor for expert advice if you have a ‘problem’ lawn and need further advice on treating moss or need help choosing a quality fertiliser.
Take a look at our birdcare and Wildlife World ranges if you are wishing to attract more wildlife to your garden. From homes for hedgehogs and ladybirds, there are even cameras to monitor the wildlife visiting your garden. And of course, everything you could need for the birds. If you have already have a bird bath, make sure it is always topped up with fresh water. Nesting boxes would be a great start but make sure you don’t disturb any nesting birds in garden hedges! Food is always a great attractant for all wildlife and birds so make sure your bird table is always topped up. Food can also be left on the ground for hedgehogs, blackbirds, wrens and thrushes.
Hanging bird feeders and bird tables are wonderful for attracting different types of birds to your garden and look for specialist seed mixes and fat balls for the perfect, easy option. Kitchen leftovers can also be used including grated cheese, apples, pears and other soft fruits, not to mention sultanas, raisins and currants which should be soaked overnight to soften the fruits. Fresh fruit including melons, strawberries and apples can also be used to attract butterflies to your garden!
Next month: It’s time to get busy choosing new garden furniture and lawncare really steps up a pace!
