As the clocks go forward and the weather begins to thaw, March is the time to begin working on your lawn for maximum effect throughout the summer months.
There are two points to remember before giving your lawn its initial light cut of the year. Firstly, brush the grass briskly to remove any debris that may have collected over the winter, before raking it thoroughly to leave the grass standing upright, resulting in a closer cut by the lawnmower.
Your lawn will also benefit from a rolling during March but make sure the surface is dry before you do this. Always give your lawn a neat trim at the edges to keep it looking its best before the next cut.
March is an excellent time to prune your shrubs and roses by removing any dead or damaged stems, and to to encourage new growth on the garden’s faithful shrubs, including willows and hardy fuschias, prune stems back hard this month. And summer flowering clematis will also gain from pruning last year’s growth now too.
Perennials benefit from division, especially older plants, and March is the perfect time to divide any congested perennials, enabling more vigorous new growth. Once the plant has been successfully divided, the separated section can be replanted elsewhere in the garden, or passed onto friends and family.
For the most delicious home grown tomatoes, start sowing the seeds now for indoor varieties. Easy to grow, tomatoes are the perfect first step for all ages to enjoy growing their own fruit and vegetables. You can even grow them on a windowsill! Outdoor varieties should be sown later in March and planted out in early June.
Early varieties of seed potatoes can now be prepared in trays and left to stand in a cool, bright position, and you .
You can also start sowing crops outdoors for bountiful supplies for your table in the coming months. Look for broad beans, lettuces, leeks, beetroot and radishes to name but a few.
Next month: Gardening gloves at the ready - there will be lots to do in your garden in April!
