A Fruitful Month in the Garden!

July is the perfect time to harvest early summer fruits and fill your trug with the benefits of your tender loving care from the past few months.

With strawberries and cherries, summer raspberries, blackcurrants and early plums to choose from, you can enjoy these delicious fruits whilst continuing to nurture and protect ripening peach, nectarines and apricots.  Use nets to ward off birds so that they don’t eat the fruits before you do!  And train new blackberry canes and remove any moulding or damaged soft fruits.

Your vegetable garden should be bursting with tasty vegetables to pick now including peas, carrots, salads, potatoes and globe artichokes, beets and spinach.  You can also sow spring cabbage, turnips, fennel and chicory.

As fruits grow larger, the increased weight can bend and snap the branch so make sure they are tied in well.  It goes without saying that all vegetables need a regular watering, particularly in dry weather.

After spending many months cultivating bountiful displays of healthy and colourful plants in your borders, aim to prolong flowering by deadheading now.  Cut back delphiniums and geraniums once the first flowering has finished as this will encourage a second blossoming.  After cutting back, ensure you feed the plants to maximise the opportunity of another flowering and if you add a thick layer of mulch, this will help to retain moisture and keep any weeds down.

Feed containers and hanging baskets regularly and a few late border perennials will benefit from a feed now before they bloom.  Don’t forget to take cuttings from patio plants ready for next year.

If you are searching for plants that will flower in the autumn, look for amaryllis and autumn crocuses to plant now.

A wonderful advantage to growing beautiful flowers in your garden is that you can cut these flowers and bring them indoors to brighten and scent any room – just remember to use secateurs or sharp scissors and cut carefully, placing the flowers in water immediately.

Many houseplants love a spell in the sunshine – especially if they have been located in a hot conservatory.  Simply place on the patio for the next couple of months.  Houseplants should always be fed and watered as often as necessary.

Grosvenor Gardening Tips for July

1.  Water weekly this month, especially during dry weather, adding mulch to retain moisture
2.  Check climbing vegetables have sufficient support
3.  If you are planning to trim a hedge, be careful you don’t disturb any wildlife – hedges provide excellent shelter and are a wonderful food source
4.  Fingers crossed, July will be one of the driest months of the year so is the perfect time to paint any outside fencing, garden sheds and furniture
5.  Lawns would benefit from a summer feed this month
6.  Keep ponds clear of algae and weeds
7.  Young hedgehogs may now be seen in your garden – but please do not feed them with bread and milk.  Use dog or cat food instead.  We have a range of Wildlife World products perfect for creating a habitat for small mammals including hedgehog houses.  Take a look on your next visit to Grosvenor.
8.  Harvest herbs this month to encourage new shoots – hang any surplus fresh herbs and dry out ready to enjoy later in the year.
