Grosvenor Garden Centre has been named North West regional winner of the new ‘Green City Town & Country Community Award’ in conjunction with the Garden Centre Association, and came second in the national finals announced last month.
Despite numerous entries, only three garden centres in the North West met the criteria required and Grosvenor stood “head and shoulders above the others”, according to regional judge, Amanda Long.
“I was very impressed with the enthusiasm and creativity Grosvenor Garden Centre showed with their entry – members of staff have really supported the initiative and the messages of the Green City were prominently in force,” commented Amanda.
Grosvenor has been raising awareness of the Green City’s messages by promoting the real value of plants and green space. By featuring in-store displays, promoting the most effective plants for cleaning the air, together with health and wellbeing plants, and a foyer feature focused entirely on the vast range of eco-friendly products available from compost makers to wormeries and compostable garden refuse sacks, Grosvenor even created its own ‘green footprint’ logo to be used on all eco-friendly in-store products.
"We were delighted to represent the region in the national finals, and feel that this new award underlines Grosvenor’s long-standing policy of sourcing ethical and organic produce across all our ranges. We have always strived to forge links with the local community and the Green City’s messages sit perfectly with our own ideals,” commented Iain Wylie, managing director, Grosvenor Garden Centre.
Despite winning the award, Grosvenor is not resting on its laurels. With more plans in place to promote Green City key messages about the benefits plants bring environmentally, economically and socially through customer information and in-store displays plus energy efficient lighting to be introduced throughout the garden centre and biomass fuel in the soon to be remodelled offices. Grosvenor’s objective to become even greener has even stretched as far as a new office printer which uses eco-friendly paper and inks, thereby cutting down on in-store laminating.
A new bottle bank has also been installed in the car park, together with a recycling plastic plant pot facility to encourage customers to recycle too.
And Grosvenor, in conjunction with Saunders Honda, displayed the new Honda Civic Hybrid at the garden centre recently, illustrating how, by combining a petrol engine with an electric battery, we could all save 30% on fuel.
